Recent purchase - Late 19th century large Terracotta model of ‘Dying Achilles’. Cast by Peter Ipsen and stamped ‘P.Ipsen Kjobenhavn 584’ and signed by ‘E.Herter 1884’
A substantial model measuring 47cm tall (inc base).

This is a new factory to me...would someone kindly confirm to what actual date this figure was produced and would it have been made in large numbers? Thank you
I will try to see if I can see his name in my books. I see a lot of Terracotta models now on line which I never seen before lately. I would think they are all mainly reproductions. Even in the old catalogs of the past I have only seen mainly large life size castings which were rarely up for sale. Now I see so many Terracotta figures for sale with bases of wood and other materials. I am not sure who is producing them. Sometimes you see some castings of American made ceramics produced mainly in the 40's but this is not one of them. This appears to be a very nicely cast piece with excellent detail which all terracotta pieces must have. I remember in 1980 there were tours done by dealers who had a lot of bronzes which were all reproductions, but they never told the public that they were copies and so we see many of them. Trouble is now we see so many of cast resin copies which since they are solid are sold as metal. A lot of the cast resin pieces of the early 90's and previous had less than good detail in hands and all have bases so you cannot see that they are not cast hollow like metal should be.
Hi Phil - Many Thanks for your response, this is a completely new ceramic field to me and your information makes for interesting reading. It’s casting is exceptional and even the base is Terracotta and bears the impressed ‘P.Ipsen Kjobenhavn 399’.
I have managed to find one other possible example that was sold through Christie’s in 2011 Lot 96 Sale No 3699, this appears to be one of the same model?
