I recently acquired this odd piece. It is primarily wood carved with the metal helmet and glass eyes. Has anyone seen anything like this? It appears to be some type of puppet head. I appreciate any help. Thanks!

What is the round thing between the lips? It looks like the end of a piece of tubing.
It looks like smoke was supposed to come out of a tube between the lips. Maybe part of an early 20th century illusionist, spiritist, ventriloquist doll ?
I was thinking of spitting water but with the head being wooden, smoke makes more sense plus would add more to the mystique....it’s a bit creepy but I’m liking it more and more.
I’d love to see it with smoke waifing! If you should decide to experiment with smoke, you would make me happy if you post an update with pictures. :^)
I have casually contemplated carving a body. Smoke would be pretty cool. I'm not sure what the purpose of smoke would be. The tube is definitely for some medium and smoke makes sense.
It is definitely a little creepy. I'm not getting any dark vibes from it. However, my wife and kids have no little dislike for it. Personally, I love it.
I wonder if it's from one of those gypsy vending machines? You know, the ones that give you a fortune card..
I've thought it may be from Europe. Possibly Italy. Of course I don't have anything to support that.
The tv program, “My Strange Inheritance”, had an episode not long ago that featured a Chicago puppet opera that was willed to 2 brothers. Check it out online....those guys might be a great source of information about your item.
