I can't think why I haven't posted this - I've had it for simply years. A cheap flea market find long ago, I didn't know exactly what it was at the time until I learned more about fairy lamps. It looks like a bowl, but is actually the base of a three piece fairy lamp.
It is made from two or three layers of glass, clear over blue with applied machine threading which has been pulled in the manner of so called "Nailsea" type glass (although this example is far finer & more sophisticated). The bowl measures around 18 cm x 17 cm wide across the trefoil shaped, crimped top rim, 6.5 cm tall, & 8.5 cm across the base.
There is a hand written number on the base - which I believe was an old pre - decimal currency price of 5 shillings. (No idea if this was the original asking price or a second hand price from later on)
This post was inspired by retromix/Uffe's recent post of a similar item in ruby glass.
A high quality, well finished piece of Victorian art glass, possibly English in origin. Still displays well despite missing its other parts.
It's really quite beautiful! I thought it was a bowl at first glance until I read your description. Bowl or lamp base, it's still very beautiful.

Some "orphan" fairy lamp parts (& I have a few) can look slightly incomprehensible on their own, but this one passes quite well as fancy bowl. I keep chocolates in it! :-)
And a perfect piece to keep chocolates in. I'd be doing the same if it were mine!
I had to look up how this was a base as I only know of two piece fairy lamps.
I gather these were not so common?
Hiya Karen, as a self - confessed fairy lamp "tragic", I concur that the two piece ones are far more commonly found, while the three - piece variety are much harder to find intact. Imagine how easily they could have been separated inadvertently over the years, either through breakage or simply being divided into being a two - piece fairy lamp & a fancy "bowl". There are also fairy lamps with even more parts - such as fairy lamp epernges, wall sconces, & chandeliers. I have a wonderful book on fairy lamps which shows the full range...seriously - beyond fabulous...just thinking about the higher - end examples gets me all hot & bothered, LOL!
