I have had this sculpture for some years and it has always irritated me that i cant find out who is the artist. I think its very well made and no ”amateur” jobb. I think there is a signature under the glaze on the backside but its impossible to read. Has anyone got an idea where its from and whos the maker?

i get your frustration! so many wonderful pieces out there without an artist's name to them. i have several and obsessively search for the artist every now and again.

Is the clay stained to produce the skin color, or is the entire figural cast with that color stoneware?

      Hi art.pottery!
The skin colour is the raw surface of the burned terrakotta and the faces and arms are unglazed. Thankyou for interest.

Not sure why it looks so familiar. Reminiscent of wares produced by several artists at California Faience in the 1930s, but those typically have a red clay body. Also similar to designs by Dorr Bothwell for GMcB and by Marianne Starck for MA&S.

You’ve tried a tissue paper and pencil rubbing of the mar to see if you can lift and letters from the mark?

art.pottery. I have also thought about Ma&s Marianne stark. I live in sweden so thats not to far from Bornholm. At the same time a have found lot of objects from around the world maybe boughr as souvenirs or send as gifts so nothing is impossible. Thankyou for your inputs, very interesting????
      Regards Uffe
