Hello everyone!!
I just acquired this fine bronze Japanese hare sculpture for my collection. This BIG hare, or usagi as the Japanese would call it, was sculpted in Japan around 1980. I have not been able to find who the sculptor was as there are no markings to be found anywhere on this fellow. He's very massive, compared to my other bronze pieces, and measures 26" tall, 13" wide and 19" deep. He weighs in at 43 1/2lbs!! A very highly detailed piece and a very rare piece as I've only seen one other in all of my years of collecting and that one is displayed in a fine arts gallery, of Japanese, Asian and European art, in New England.

Thank you Jenni!! I too love that expression and pose. I'm was pretty excited when I found this big fellow at an antique dealer in England. I like to think of it as my Christmas gift from me to me:)
It's a fabulous sculpture Scott and congratulations on finding this BIG bronze.
The Japanese like most Asians revere rabbits and have a number of legends around them.
The most popular is about the moon and the rabbit, it's a lovely story.
I'm envious of you being able to see and touch this creature with so much personality!
Thank you Karen for the wonderful comment! I feel VERY lucky to have this big fellow in my possession. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. So, It was meant to be that this big hare become part of my collection.
