Pair of 1898 Alaskan Railroad Track Bookends

    Made by J.D. True

This pair of bookends was made from a section of the original 45 pound narrow gauge steel train track in Alaska that was used by White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad Rail in 1898.

These were the first rails for the Lake Bennett to Whitehorse route and were built from 45 lb. track from England.

The WP&YR was built during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800's. The railroad extends 110 miles from Skagway, Alaska, to the rich gold fields of the Klondike.

This piece of rail was preserved by J.D. True, who was an engineer that spent nearly 40 years working for the railroad in Alaska. J.D. True made these bookends and sold them as Souvenirs from the rails.

Each bookend is marked as follows:

    Stamped:
    W.P. & Y.R. 1898
    LAKE BENNETT TO WHITEHORSE
    FIRST RAIL FROM ENGLAND
45 LB. [this pound weight is the original weight per yard for the track]
