We have had these coins in the family for over 50 years. Would you be able to tell us if they are real and the approximate value?

On the back side if you look it is marked as a copy.

      Impossible to tell from pictures.

Agree with fhrjr2-- the copy mark gives it away. The coloration looks odd as well.

Someone intentionally tried to remove the word COPY in an attempt to deceive. In original condition with the word COPY clearly readable the coin would have been worth $5. The way it is now it would be considered a forgery and result in fines and or jail time it attempted to be sold as an original gold piece.

Very interesting...I have submitted it for appraisal and will keep you all posted once the report is received.

No appraisal needed; a small encircled C means it is a COPY (fair and square).
I doubt it`s gold, either, but it can be tested with electronic tester without damaging the coin.

As you can see I am new to this. How come people “love it” if it’s a copy or fake? Do some people still collect copies? Do they have a collector value? Just curious. I should be receiving the appraisal today and will let you all know!

Gold has value and will always be precious. Have it tested.

A fake would be worth about $20-30 depending on when it was made and ... A 1854 Twenty D. Kellogg should weigh between 33.3 and 33.42 grams. ... of the coin, fakes often did not use .900 gold, but 14K-18K gold (.58-.75),

Well...it is a “copy” as many of you have said. Now it is time to see if it is really gold.
    13. IVAN49 IVAN49, 3 years ago
Even 14 K gold cannot be $ 20-30, depending on weight and fineness, it is still more valuable than scrap gold of the same weight.
