Here is the first SHERMAN in RED piece that I have in my collection. The piece is done in Japanned Black, there is the SHERMAN rectangle plaque on the back. the outer Row of RED {and I mean RED- unbelievably beautiful} stones, 19 in all, make up the frame of a teardrop, the next row, moving toward center, are AB stones and alternate between marquise and round stones. There are 3 small red stones at the to of the row accenting a round AB at the top. All of these beautifully surround a single teardrop red center stone.
    the piece measures 2-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches.

Simply the most gorgeous red I have ever seen.

If you like red, the japanned black is the one. This comes with a warning as they are extremely addictive ! Nothing is more deep red and the book says other jewellers tried this with red stones but the siam red is like no other ! They do not make the stones anymore. Like myself I collect siam red now, but I am very picky and the backs have to be japanned also. This one is one that I am looking for, great score on this masterpiece !~

The pieces in red often have gold backs but the stones are red and do not come close to the japanned deep Siam red broohes.

If anyone would know the special-ness of this piece, it would be our Phil!
It’s a beauty! Question for Phil...why is it called “siam”? Is it just a name like “watermelon” collectors have attached to the crystal?

thank you Phil for your input and kind comments, I agree this is addictive! I still can not get over how red the stones, they almost look as though they are on fire. Totally love these, RED by SHERMAN. thanks again.

I am not sure when this term was coined except to say that siam red colour is associated with being the most vivid blood red colour, and the deepest of reds. Sherman jewels took this term and ran with it, the magical term of this colour inspires one to look over and over at it, and see nuances you never imagined before. The use of black japanning made the colour more intense as it does not interfere with shiny prongs blurring the effect. It is interesting to see that gold plated backs usually use a light siam red stone that are not giving the astonishing effect of the deep siam red that Sherman was famous for. It is a colourway and a colour that was to become Sherman's signature colour !!~

PhilDMorris - thank you so much for answering the question about where the name SIAM came from, much appreciated. Lori
