A friend of mine passed away a few months ago and i was invited by his family to pick out a few things to keep. These two were mounted on his ceiling. I know nothing about them, but one thing we had in common was that we are both somewhat obsessed with Japanese culture.

It is always special when one gets to have a memento (of any sort) of a passed friend's things. I trust they will serve the intended purpose -- to help allow you to remember your friend fondly. Please also accept my condolences for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I hate to say it, but these look exactly like the kites they sell at Daiso(Japanese $1.50 store). I had 3 or 4 different ones...finally sold them at a garage sale. Nice for display..and if they remind you of your friend, then they're priceless.

With sympathy of the loss of your friend who has a great family who allowed you to have something of his. A wonderful gesture. The few friends I have lost, that opportunity was never expressed. At first glance, these look like twin kites!

i think that they are twin kites, Alfie, and they probably did cost only $1.50 at Daiso. i still really like them as kind of pop culture / Japan / 1970s.
