Living and growing up in Washington state we all remember 41 years ago when Mt. St. Helens erupted. I was 10 years old at the time and remember all the ash and the dark days. Luckily the eruption and ash traveled the opposite direction from where I live. But we still got ash fallout.
I have this Geological Survey picture hanging in my garage. And I found this bottle of ash in dad's workshop. Not sure why people collected ash, because...
During the 9 hours, 540 million tons of ash from Mount St. Helens fell over an area of more than 22,000 square miles.
The ash cloud was roughly 40 miles (64 km) wide and 15 miles (24 km; 79,000 ft) high.
Some of the ash drifted around the globe within about 2 weeks.

Once, when flying from LA to Sea/Tac, it was a clear day and the pilot flew over Mt. St. Helens for us to see. A VERY awesome sight to see!!!
I was lucky enough to have an older brother that was a pilot. About a year after it had settled, we flew around and through the crater. We had to watch out because there was so many small planes doing the same thing along with news choppers.
The devastation was amazing! I distinctly remember all those trees just laid over like dominoes..
dav2no1, I visited the site in the 1990s when it looked a bit like a moonscape.
It's a day that will always be remembered by many people in the northwest..
