My Great-Grandfather was a Civil War vet. but I have doubts that this badge is related to his service.

Grand Army of The Republic (GAR)
Thanks for your input. Do you have a photo I can refer to?
You can pull it up as fast I can and have it faster. These, I believe were picked up a veteran "camps" (reunions). Never heard if they were actually issued.
This confuses me all the more considering he served with the 22nd North Carolina. Oh well. The mystery continues.

I had four direct ancestors who served in the Civil War and the only one that I know of who messed with the GAR or UCV was the one who was kicked out during basic training due to his poor eyesight.... The other three saw quite a bit of action.
This is the standard configuration of the GAR. Glad to hear he wasn't one of the Northern invaders. Could he have been a captured Confederate who joined the Northern army to avoid dying in a Yankee prison and sent west to fight Indians. Known as "galvanized Yankees". That could explain it, but doubt he would wear a GAR badge in the South.
Some bad info/ speculation on here-- your badge is not a standard GAR badge.
MIGHT be a UCV Reunion badge-- should be able to search online and may find something similar.
With that being, it could just as easily be some other sort of fraternal organizations badge for some event.
