Back in about 1966, when I was going to aviation school in the South, one year the farmers were giving away gunny sacks of peanuts to anybody who wanted them. When I asked why, one farmer said, "You didn't know there is a peanut shortage ? That's why we are giving them away". Then he filled me in. Told me they had been paid for but the peanut butter producers had announced that there was a peanut shortage, and only picked up a portion of the crop. The price of peanut butter was about tripled by this false shortage. The farmers were laughing, but not realizing that they had to pay the inflated price for their own product. Economics-Capitalism, 401.
