There's something about the history of art and design which i find so fascinating. It's another way of understanding the past, present and future, but often one which has meaning beyond words. More of a feeling, color, or even a premonition which allows us to be transported back in time and to have a bit of understanding of the time.

The first pic is by FX Leyendecker - the older brother, i think. Some people say that his work was more developed than his brother's.

      ho2cultcha, Cool. :-)

The young man in Leyendecker's painting doesn't seem to need Brook's Rupture Appliance:

      https://www.americanillustrators.com/artist/leyendecker-f-x/

Which, I suppose, is another approach to selling something that definitely is not glamorous. };-)

He did have a definite talent for drawing the human form:

      About F. X. Leyendeker:

      More about F.X.:

A Brooks' Rupture Appliance Co. trade catalog:

Harold C. Brooks seems to have been an interesting person:

The December 1934 Country Gentleman magazine cover:

So I'm trying to figure out: what is the unsolved mystery?

No joy on finding a readable version of that December 1934 issue of Country Gentleman, which is a shame, because Paul de Kruif seems to have been a very interesting person:
