In October, 1961, work commenced on the construction of the two primary towers of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The Staten Island, New York tower came into existence first and topped out by the following year. Its twin on the opposite end of the Narrows emerged in April, 1962 and was completed before the turn of 1963. Viewed from Brooklyn, as shown in the photograph above, the Brooklyn, New York tower nears completion in late-1962.
Bethlehem Steel built the Staten Island tower, while the Harris Structural Steel Company assembled the Brooklyn tower.
