This is a late 1850s ambrotype of a young woman. She wears a bonnet and black shawl. and there is some subtle tinting to her cheeks along with the bonnet ties.

What stands out in this image is her stunning beauty-- the pose seems to accentuate her beauty.

The artist is unknown, but he certainly got this one right!

My photos of my photograph and not for reproduction without permission.

very unusual wears one glove, the chiffon cape must have been a luxurious item, and the makeup

Thanks kiva— agree, she must have had some money. No gloves— just a little softer focus on the lower hand.

I was thinking about her this morning and wondered whether she had had her portrait painted before. It’s as if she knew how to pose for the camera and did her own thing rather than doing the stiff pose you normally see. Maybe there is a painting of her ???

Thanks again vetraio— appreciate your additional thoughts.

I’ll be on the lookout for the painting!
