The Papillon decor was created in 1898 as the successor to "Silberthau" (?) And is one of the most common decors from the Lötz company. It was applied to a wide variety of basic colors, candia, creta, cobalt, dark blue, mountain blue, opal, orange, ruby, imperial red (e.g. PN II 6060), yellow and opal ribbed. It is always amazing how versatile this decor could be used. In 1902, at the exhibition of the Vienna Secession in Düsseldorf, an entire room with glass tiles in this decor was shown (see Neuwirth "Lötz Austria 1900", pages 268 and 269). Square jardines in Papillon were also shown in these rooms. The production of this decoration was simple and was created by rolling in silver yellow crumbs. However, despite this simple method, the Lötz company has succeeded in producing an enormous variety of different appearances. This was done through the subsequent iridescence with various metal salts and the use of differently shaped, large and small silver-yellow crumbs. The early Papillon pieces and the later pieces from the 20's and 30's have a different appearance. With these later versions, the company tried to use innovative solutions to let the image of the decor appear in the new design. For example, through different reflection zones on one piece, or the application of the crumbs on pieces with a running overlay.
The "Version 226" (1925) also belongs to the new appearance of this decor.

Photo 2: Creta PN I 7468 (new 822), Creta PN I 7891/6, Candia PN I 6978, yellow for Bakalowits 85/3802 (designed by Antoinette Krasnik).

Photo 3: Vessels from the 20s and 30s, PN's mostly unknown. The vase in the middle with extended handles can be seen in the cutting directory without the handle as PN III 2144 from 1924.
On the small vase in the upper right corner, in candia Papillon silver inside, the different reflection zones gold and pink / purple are clearly visible. Late version lower left 8.
