This is a family piece I inherited from my grandmother.
It's a beautiful thing despite obviously having been altered at some point with part of the top removed as evidenced by the cut tops of legs. I believe the current top was included at the same time (and the conforming lower surface as well.
It was constructed using only joinery & pegs as was customary for Chinese furniture of this period.
The carving is particularly fine with a pierced lower gallery & upper skirt is carved with relief in similar motif.
very nice this is late qing probably, artistically decent, but valuewise not so significant , in this state it is Frankensteined
the point is for real value you need huanghuali the Dalbergia variation
and even when they stated huanhuai , it is almost always fake, because there weren,t thats much of rosewood variation trees
and the main reason this variation of the tree was used for folkloric fytochemie caused by wel known theory according the principle of the theory named the flow of Qi
i am probably not far of , i was a bit lazy , but looked for the outswept frieze combined with the gadroon , i am getting sloppy sorry
I would imagine late Qing also, both stylistically as well as tying in to family history.
As it's a family piece, value is irrelevant, it is a lovely decorative pedestal I get a great deal of use out of.
I have a porthole from an old ship that I sit on top of it which finishes it off nicely & makes for a larger, more sturdy base for larger pieces I'm displaying.
Judging just by what a delight this would be to any designer who faniced the best of the best for their display with this little pedestal for a featured vase to garner its way to glory !~
@PhilDMorris It's always been a favourite of mine for exactly those reasons.
I love the "waisted" form, the depth of colour that only comes with years of polish & care.
It makes almost anything you put on it look fantastic!
I used to delight in polishing my wood for those reasons also. Cannot get around like I used to so it becomes more difficult now.
