Calves are weaned soon after birth and are taught to drink out of a pail instead of directly from their mother's teat.
This allows the cow to be milked by the farmer and gives a better milk production.
This is often, if not always unacceptable to the young calves, who understandably, would rather nurse directly from their moms.
To discourage this natural behavior, many types of calf wieners were invented to place on the calf's nostrils preventing it to suckle from the mom.
These weaners were not left on the calf for too long, only long enough until the calf gives up trying. If the calf is still persistent, the cow will let her offspring know that it should drink from the pail.
Some weaners irritate the mother's milk bag, and she will push the calf away, others, like this three-ring wiener, are more directed to make it difficult to nurse directly on the cow's teat.
