    1940s-50s Ullman C-Master Inspection Mirror

    Folded: 7"
    Unfolded: 11"
    Mirror: Approximately 2" x 3 1/2"
    Extended: 15 1/2"

This was found in one of Dad's tool boxes. It is a very early Ullman inspection mirror. It's marked Brooklyn, New York on the back. The company was founded in 1935 and moved in 1959, so it has to be between 1940 and 1959. My father retired from the Air Force in 1972 and I believe he may have acquired this in the 1950s? At that time he was working on the aircraft simulators.

The handle has some knurling for slip resistance. The knuckle joint allows the mirror to articulate up/down, side to side, etc. The range of motion is very nice. The mirror is a real mirror and not plastic like ones made today.

    ULLMAN
In 1935, the company was founded by Robert Ullman in New York City. At this time, the company primarily manufactured bonnet hair dryers.

    AN IDEA IS BORN
"Robert Ullman, invented the first inspection mirror while watching an aircraft mechanic use a crude mirror to view the inner workings of an engine."

"1940: The company launched a new product line focused on designing and manufacturing specialty hand tools. The first tool was the C-Master inspection mirror, which is still an active tool, known as the C-2 Inspection Mirror."

1959: Ullman Devices moved to its current headquarters, location in Ridgefield, CT.
