We received this item from my husband's grandfather's estate. He served in Pearl Harbor in WW2 during the Japanese attack but not sure if that's where it came from. The USS Tennessee was commissioned in 1919 and decommissioned in 1947 so it could also be from WWI. It still shows it's original paint colors. I'm looking for any information on this shell casing and appreciate any help.

      Nice piece of trench art!

If you are unfamiliar with the genre, there is an article about it on this site as well as hundreds of examples in the show and tell.

Based on the shell decoration and ship, I’d think that this was an inter- war piece.

The bottom of the shell should have the manufacturer markings along with date to give you a “no earlier” time for the shell. You can add a photo to your posting and I would be happy to try and decipher.

Also May want to search for George’s service records to determine his dates on the USS Tennessee.

At any rate it is great to see this quality piece of trench art!

The bottom of the shell appears to say 1892. There are no other markings

Glad to help out— assume George and Sylvia were eventually married as this is still in the family?

Yes, I found out that they were. He got out of the service in 1926 and carried this home to her.
