This is a model of a GP38-2 which was a road switcher. The GP stands for General Purpose and Road Sweitchers would be used in railyards for switching and on mainlines. The actual locomotives were made from 1972 through 1986. You can see old photos with 8 to 10of locomotives like these pulling a train. Now they use much larger and faster locomotives for mainline freight but you will still see these in switchyards and short lines.
The model is HO gauge which is 1/87 scale. The model is from the 1970s and looks like a gem. It required some assembly, mostly the railing and lights. Luckily this one was fully assembled and done well.
Tomorrow will be the super cool caboose that goes with the locomotive.
Awesome model, in great condition, still doing its thing! Not sure those ever came out in the "Black Widow" scheme, either the models, or the prototypes, though, even though I'm in my mid 50's, there's still a LOT out there, that I've never seen. This one is usually called a "Bloody Nose", a rather silly reference to the red on the chopped nose of the unit. I generally don't care for those monikers, but, live, and let live, right?
Terrific model, and always a thrill to see a survivor from our youth, still running strong!
