I have been collecting coins for about 5 years. I have much to learn yet. I enjoy searching for error coins. I recently came across this 1974 D penny,
it weighs 3.31 grams. I made sure my scale is working correctly. I can't seem to find another like it online.
I'm new at this...can anyone tell me why it's so heavy?

That is odd..a copper penny should weigh 3.11 +/- .13.

The picture looks like you have 2 penny stuck together? I was trying to figure out if you had a copper and an aluminum penny stuuck together. But that would be way heavier.

By the way, it's illegal to own a 1974 aluminum penny.

There are not two coins stuck together...
I put another 1974 penny beside it to see the one is much thicker. Sorry..I should have said that
      .

I don't believe this to be an aluminum penny.
I can post more pics if needed...
I appreciate your thoughts on this coin. Thank you.

I was just pointing out that fact..an aluminum penny would weigh .94 gram.

An *aluminum*penny?? Never heard of that one, though my Mom used to have a little can full of WWII era steel (or lead?) pennies, when presumably copper was a resource deemed best used elsewhere...?

AO - Was supposed to replace copper, but never happened. A few snuck out, but were never released so still belong to the government.
