A wood egg in cup shape 'thing'
I bought this not having a clue what it may be. It resembles an egg in a cup with round holes around the top section, then something round inside. My best and only guess is that whatever is inside was once some kind of air purifier/freshener ...pumice ????

If well done, the thing inside (usually a ball) was carved from the same one piece of wood and not inserted. Not easy to carve that way.

blunderbuss2 .... You mean a puzzle ball? Whatever is inside is of a different substance. I wonder if it is meant to have an oil or something poured into it to make a room smell nice ... ??

Are the holes large enough to accommodate a fingertip? I’m wondering if the ball sat in a small amount of water so that someone could moisten their fingertips when necessary, such as when they were thumbing thru papers or counting paper money.

I went to a puzzle ball once . Danced with a girl who wasn't exactly knock-kneed and not exactly bow-legged. More like she had one of each.

Does the 'top' part of it come loose from the 'bottom' part of it, and/or is the woodgrain consistent that it is made from one piece of wood with a lid that come off? (even if said lid might be now stuck to it) BB2's initial comment of a woodcarver's skill piece could make sense but your comment about the inner "ball" would point us all in a totally different direction.

You can add two more photos to this showing, I myself would welcome seeing them? :-) :-) :-)

AnythingObscure .. Sorry I've been so long ... I mislaid 'it'. Looking at images 1 & 4, I'd say the grain does not follow through, although there is no glue residue between the top and bottom sections. the inner egg like thing is turnable if pushed with my little finger, also made of wood, painted gray. The is a piece of dowel on the base ... inner egg joined to that?? ... I'm so annoyed with it

I've gone back to this. I think the inner 'egg' is pumice. I wonder if it is some sort of pomander ... Maybe drip a few drops of fragrant oil inside and it would smell nice ... like a dog with a bone ... I know !!
