wall sconces with brass bowls

I remember these sconces hanging on grandma's wall beside her fireplace. They are wood with a gold finish. The bowls/planters (??) are brass. Anyone know anything about the design? maker? age? I was told by someone that they were sconces that were used for holy water in church. They do have, what appears to be, water marks on the inside of the brass bowls.
