I’ve posted this vase before, but some later research brought me back into this piece. I had an expert tell me this vase is early early Meiji to late Edo period. I’ve found similar and identical traits in my vase and those made by Kanzan Denshichi. I found an almost identical vase in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The vase I found shares the same lattice and incising. The use of gilt dots, scrolling, scalloping, and landscapes are also comparable. It’s also worth mentioning the Kanzan Denshichi had tenure at the Hikone kiln during the clans management until the leader Li was assassinated in 1860, and Kanzan returned to Kyoto to open his own kiln in 1862. The vase is marked with the Koto marking, not a Kanzan signature. But if he was working under the kiln name the vase probably marked with the Koto mark to show the kilns collective effort. The look and the history match up. I’ve added some comparison photos between my vase (left side) and the Fitzwilliam piece (right side). The only person I could find with lattice and incising work so fine like this was from Kanzan.
