This is a Chinese Daoist potion bottle used in rituals in the ordainment of priest, healing among other things. This in my opinion is artwork in carving. The skin of the stone is incorporated into the piece, everything down to the claws are carved perfectly. This is true Chinese art and it has a letter explaining its origin and types of ritual used in.

Beg to differ. This is nowhere near TRUE Chinese Art or Jade Artwork. At best, a fictitious, all-in-one and made-to-look-mystical decorative or tourist piece. The skin does not look natural at all in my opinion. Again, quality pieces of Chinese Jade do not filter down to reach mediocre workmanship like this piece of yours, so there's nothing much to discuss about the material.
Chinese Daoist potion bottle? Looks like an enlarged snuff bottle, but that's not made of Jadeite or Nephrite for sure. So what does the letter say? I'm amused.
You have every right to differ davezquanw, the item came from a professor of archaeology estate on the coast of Oregon and the letter of authentication and appraisal are from England. His beach front summer home was most likely a fake too??
Professor or not, that's irrelevant. I find it amusing that people actually perceive professors or doctors collecting only the real stuff probably because of their profession - this cannot be taken for granted. The validity of letter of authentication and appraisal from England means nothing unless it is from a reputable source. Plenty of dubious appraisers and auction houses in England and U.S., not to mention in East Asia as well. What has his beach front summer home got to do with appraising this piece?
The authentication and appraisal are from another doctorate in education from England. Your looking at 4 photos which makes their opinion of the item in their hands dubious? Do understand what your saying:
A man in a bar asks for 7 year old scotch; the bartender gives him 5 year old scotch thinking what is the difference.
