This candlestick was found today in an opportunity shop. The black and white flowers attracted my attention and I recognized the decor as being Wiener Werkstatte. Unfortunately it has quite a few nicks and seems to have been very well used over the last one hundred years. It doesn't matter to me because I will never sell it. This one is a keeper!
I noticed the impressed mark and it was familiar to me.
At home later I checked it out on the net.
It has the incised Gmundner Keramik mark, K and G (my own initials) and underneath a pattern number 143 and then even lower is 4. It has a copper inset for the candle to rest in. The Powolny inspired daisies (?) are picked out carefully by hand in black and white.
It's one of those objects which make a hell of a lot more sense when you put them to work. I put a candle in it and it was transformed! The flowers became a grip and the thing looks more balanced; it actually feels more balanced.
Awesome find, though I would say Powolny inspired. As far as my research has been able to determine, he only produced items for Wiener Keramik...this goes for Powolny inspired putti pieces by Ernst Wahliss and other ceramists or the region. Sadly there are no records that I can find to suggest the opposite.

Thanks Alexander! I found it at the Salvos in Kensington. It was less than a dollar from memory. I never thought I would have a piece of his. But there you go!

Horrible! Similar things are happening here in Australia too! Recycling .... I bet it comes from school art classes. Or social science? Another oddity is the use of glass as containers for weird smelling candle wax. Less destructive but just as annoying.
