This is a wonderful half plate daguerreotype which I bought more than ten years ago. The image has great contrast and also the composition is perfect. I never saw an image like this again and so after all the years it is still one of the favorites of my collection.

Wow that looks like a Hula hoop from the 50's I wonder what they used it for ? Teaching dogs to jump threw hoops ? Hmm That is interesting ! Great photo

Hoop rolling was a popular childs game of the era. Children would use a stick to keep the hoop upright and rolling.

Hoop rolling dates back to ancient times.

I guess now I think yes your right Scott ! I had forgot About that game how odd they chose that to photo . I am sure one of the kids is a boy on right and maybe the one on stool also . But it appears that it is a girl holding hoop and to me it was more a boys game . Very interesting subject matter .
Thanks Scott for clarifying that :-)

I agree the child on the right (as viewed) is a boy-- not sure on the others.

I have several hoop images in my collection and have seen others. I think parents often let children take their favorite toy to the studio to make the experience less painful!

I would have picked my doll as a girl :- ) But it is priceless to have these old photo's of kids and their toys and also pets .

Now I look again Scott they all look like boys ! Makes it hard for us today since boys wore dress's and had long curls back then . I can see the hoop now that I believe they are all boys in photo :-)

I guess maybe 2 are girls due to hats and hair bows ?
