I recently purchased this car on eBay. Its about 9 inches long, and the sticker says "Ludington Griswold Inc., Saybrook, Connecticut." I can only find one other toy made by this company, a metal flying wing glider. I can find no other examples of this car. I bought it because I think it has very pretty lines and it will look great in my collection. But did this company make other toy cars? Does this car have any particular collectable value? Thanks.
i got one similar except mine is a wilbur shaw indy 500 - close body style though
I'm familar with the Wilbur Shaw Indy cars, those are fantastic! This car is modeled after the race cars from that same era for sure.
Thanks for the "love it" ratings! If anyone knows anymore about this model, please let me know.
Still doing some online research. As far as I can find, Ludington Griswold Inc., located in Saybrook, Connecticut, was a small aeronautical research group that operated a wind tunnel, and did research (some secret) for the military. They must have at some time or other, decided to also dabble in toy making, as in the "Super-Sonic LG 515" pressed aluminum glider toy (you can still find these on eBay). But still, I can't find anything in particular about this car. What year was it released? What is the name of this toy, is it modelled after a particular grand prix car, etc? Thanks for your help.
Wind tunnel design? Super-Sonic? Aluminum alloys? One must wonder what was designed first. The toy? Or the "secret Super-sonic aluminum clad aircraft"? The car's open wheel styling appears to be from the 40's. Looking at the toy's underpan, I see a molded and grooved wooden sleeve surrounding the front axle, and a sprung hook to which an aperture through the tail end has another hook. It seems to me that the inertial energy provided by the taught spring somehow coiled around the front axle would provide a sort of 'pull-back' energised car? Am I off base? Is this what the string and spring axle combination provide?
I know this car, it is made by "LG", the same company that makes TVs today..."Life if Good"?....no wait a minute.....It's made by "Clark W. Griswold", the guy from all the "Vacation" films......No, I see now it's Ludington Griswold inc. I know nothing about this company or toy, but it's a VERY cool piece! Enjoy it!
