I recently picked up this Kellogg phone, it's in a large cast iron box and in really nice condition except for the crummy outside paint job, looks like many coats were applied over many years, it must be very old judging by the phone itself. There is no magneto and the schematic inside reflects this fact so it appears to be factory built that way. Does anybody know what kind of phone this is? I thought military perhaps it looks to be literally bullet proof at around 40 pounds.

Mystery solved! I found it in a 1941 Kellogg catalog online, it is a model 4901 Outdoor Telephone, common battery so no magneto is used and a dial could be added if desired. I thought it was older than that because of the style of the receiver and mouthpiece.

Your kellogg outdoor phone was also used as a call box by the Police & Fire dept. painted red for fire dept. and blue was for police.
