    Here is a rather nice old wooden crate I picked up along the way somewhere. As you can see it held patent medicines for shipping.
    on one end: PREPARED BY DR. P. FAHRNEY, CHICAGO
    other end: ONE DOZ. FURNI'S ALPEN KRAUTER
    In case you were wondering what Alpen Krauter is, as I was, here it is:

    "Forni's Alpen Krauter. This laxative is made from all natural ingredients-including mandrake root, four kinds of mint, sarsaparilla and sassafras-and contains 14% alcohol. Instructions are written in English and German.
    A TONIC TO IMPROVE THE APPETITE, TO PROMOTE DIGESTION, TO REGULATE THE ACTION OF THE BOWELS, AND TO QUIET THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, ETC"
