What we have here is a 5 gallon fluid measure from the Wm Neil Co of Chicago. This item was used by filling stations to make sure their gasoline pumps were calibrated correctly. This particular one has a stamp from Virginia Dept. of Agriculture bureau of weights and measures. The images in this show and tell are after I cleaned it up this evening. It was in pretty rough shape when I picked it up today but WOW it cleaned up well. I found this and the very old smudge pot pictured with it in the far right picture (will post seperately about the smudge pot). I am SO glad I turned around and went back and got these two items after driving away and 15 miles later regretting I didnt get em! It was a stop into a little thrift shop that was mostly stuff left over after yard sales and was really surprised to find these two things. Look forward to going back and digging deeper into the other stuff that was there. Any info or valuation is always appreciated.
Here is the post of the item before clean-up:

thanks for the love officialfuel, funny you are the first to "love" this item. When I found it today I actually wondered if you may be able to give me info about this. Have you seen many of these before? Any idea about date or value?

I've seen a few of these here and there. Is the glass broken? Value depends on how bad someone wants it. I have seen restored ones go pretty high at the right auction.

the glass is not fully broken but seems to have a small crack and it is yellowed. I paid $50 for both this can and the smudge pot, figured at the time it was a good deal but wasnt sure of exactly what I had.

I think you did very well on your purchase. I know people are looking for these to restore them and then get the good money for them. Nice addition to your collection.
