Photo on left is my Grandfathers cousin Bill Friar Kent England, from his hat I was able to make out the letters HMS Bas, the only name that fits is the HMS Basilisk. From the style of photo it could have been one of two ships with that name. One was a Beagle-class steel screw sloop launched in 1889. She became a coal hulk and was renamed C 7, finally being sold into civilian service in 1905. The other was a Beagle-class destroyer launched in 1910 and sold in 1921. The only way to know for sure would be to find crew lists.
The second photo is another cousin from England, it was taken between 1903-1908. The photo was taken at the Charlsewood & Morchon studio, 6 High Street, Old Brompton, Kent
Can anyone help with rank & any other info their uniforms might tell.

Thanks scandi, that puts it right next the Dockyards, I'm sure he lived nearby as it is so close to the rest of the family.

Thank you so much scandi for taking an interest in this and for your help, this info should help me place this young man in the family tree, having someone with local knowledge of the area and is willing to share it is what I love about this site.

      Sincerely

      David

Picture 1, the single chevron makes him a Lance Corporal in the Royal Marines, he joined up at Chatham, Kent UK June 27, 1910. He was promoted to junior petty officer in 1912 & would have different insignia, so that should date the photo between 06/27/1910 & 4/6/1912. He served until 1927

I think your era approximation on the center image is accurate. If it is just on the darker mount (NOT in a complete folder), I would think that it was from the 1890s- 1910.

UK images are a little tougher for me to date. I am very familiar with US images and can get most dated within a 10 year time period, but I do not handle UK and other non US images in anywhere near the same quantity.

Thanks for taking a look Scott, I appreciate your input.
      It's not a folder.
I just posted another sailor photo yesterday & it now leads me to believe he is the one that the service records belong to not the young man in photo #2 above.
I'm trying to date it through the photographer as well, no luck there yet.

I asked on a UK forum about the business marked on photo #2 & got this response.
"The business was located at 6 High Street, Old Brompton and went through 3 phases:
      1896-1903 James Charlesworth, Photographer
      1903-1908 Charlesworth & Morehen
      1908-1928 Morehen & Co.

It is possible that your photo could be as late as c.1909 as I understand sometimes the cards the photographers used to mount the photos on could take many months to use up, so it is possible Morehen & Co were using up old stock of the Charlesworth & Morehen cards in the early months."

So I now have a date of between 1903 - 1908/1909 for that picture.
