I do not know what this is, or really anything about it. It looks like a coaster, but it is 6 3/4 inches wide. Are there coasters made for decanters or pitchers? It is about 1 1/2 inches deep. I have described it every way I can think of to search for another one, but have found nothing. When I bought it the price tag described as "weird ashtray", so I had to have it just because it made me laugh! I do collect weird (and beautiful) ashtrays, but I don't think this is one. I have searched through some Hindu, Chinese and Japanese mythology info, but it is not quite a match for the tortoise or turtle imagery I have checked out so far.

Mystery Solved

Thanks Bellin68, have you seen one like this before?

Thanks AR8Jason. Yes, I really like the design, it is fascinating. I know the coasters you mean, usually with a starburst pattern or something on the glass, but why would a drink coaster be as large as this is? That is why I wondered if sets were made to include a coaster for a pitcher or decanter. I have been looking for a sterling mark. I think it is, but have not found a mark yet. Would it be on the outside, or could it be visible only through the glass?

I found another one, described as a bottle coaster. It is the same size, 6 3/4 inches, made by Whiting, but has the starburst design. I guess my mystery is solved. Now I will have to be on the look out for the drinks coasters to go with my turtle pattern. This was great fun. Chatting about it a little helped me think about what it might be called, and how to search for a similar one.

AR8Jason, I think it is a dragon on top of the turtle, then the shell, and the serpent-like creature on the shell has the face of a woman. I love it. And, I have found out the maker! It is Fine Arts. I finally found a couple of them just like mine in old eBay listings. I still want to find out the meaning of the design, if there is any, and maybe when these were made. I read that the company was in business from 1944 - 1979.

OK, I looked at American sterling marks, and it looks like the design in the glass is actually the Fine Arts Co logo.

And I finally found the mark! I can't believe how many times I had to look it over. I did not want to polish the band, but sure enough, just a little rubbing with my finger made the mark appear without making it bright. It is by Fine Arts and it is sterling.
