I just got this on eBay, does anyone know what it is? I'm thinking maybe an old (around 1920 to 1930?) Marx windup that is missing it's drivetrain and other parts. But, I rather like the weathered appearance, and it's going into my display case as-is. Thanks.
Possibly Strauss, I think I found a good match with this one:

I'm not sure what that piece on the front is. If the guts are missing, then they were probably removed intentionally after the toy "broke", I'm guessing the metal "bumper" on the front as a similar modification by the owner. Are those pins holding it in place?
This is starting to resemble folk art, more than it is the original toy, and there is something neat about that. Someone loved it enough to keep rejuvenating it, to keep enjoying it.
I'm glad your keeping it as is, the overall patina is quite lovely. Just keep an eye on that orange rust on the wheels (might just be the yellow paint), that means is is actively degrading. The dark/black rust is safe to leave untouched, but the bright stuff you might want to gently remove and oil (so it doesn't come back).
Love it!

Thanks for the information Todd and the advice on maintaining it. It sure does have the look of a Stauss racer. I agree with the "folk art" comment, it is rather charming just as it is.
I think I found it. The overall shape very closely matches the yellow racer shown here (no manufacturer listed though), but it does look like a Strauss.

Kinda looks like a pattern for the one I have posted under Folkart
This is a wonderful example of what I enjoy collecting. Beautiful!
