This photo of what looks to be a young soldier was going to be thrown away! While helping to clean out an old barn it was discovered hanging on the barn wall in the loft full of cobwebs with a very old frame that is falling apart and broken glass. I love the tints in the picture and gave this soldier a new home! Don't know anything about it but there was a copyright on the back that says G.G. Barth?
I inherrited one of a different soldier, same flags, intact frame/glass. Would love to know if this is a long ago relative, or were these "generic".
During WW1 photographers created these large Patriotic color "surrounds" in which a photograph could be inset. The most typical size encountered is about 16 X 20, but there were also smaller button type products. Photographers also sold metal and wood frames with varying Patriotic designs to house the large images.
These were similar to a backdrop. Many different photographers offered backdrops with artillery, flags and other scenes from "Over There".

I used to have a large collection of these WWI photos. Scottvez is correct on all accounts. (as usual) Prices for these are usually in the oval frames. (AR8Jason right again) I have seen a wild swings over the years on desirability. Currently I see some of the antique gun dealers/war memorial folks slowly starting to collect WWI. In the 90s you couldn't give it away. Lots of folk want the frames for their ancestors so ask them if they are getting rid of the photo!
WW1 collecting currently has a strong collecting base and is increasing.
The upcoming WW1 centennial has drawn more folks into the arena. I would expect a notable spike in both desirability and values in the next 5-8 years for US items.

You two guys collect the military stuff, there is a posting you guys might not look at because it's a doll. I think this is not really a doll so much as a military item.
