Not sure if this photo is of a US military officer or if it is even of a military officer. The man on the left appears to be wearing a military jacket with a pin and three letters on the collar. Any help is appreciated!
You can pretty much rule out this being US military, but I can't help you beyond that.
Does not look American. Note the medal hanging on his left pocket.
If this came from the stack of photos that had the bergsaglieri, I would take a wild guess and say this was Italian as well. I've seen Italian medal ribbons worn under pocket flaps like this, and the medal looks like it might be attached to the ribbon by a staffa, which is also traditional Italian. This is pretty flimsy evidence, but might be a starting point in researching the photo.
