I found this sign pole (sign missing) in the woods in upstate NY while picking up a tractor I bought. I had it appraised (approx $1200) and it is an original cast iron base sign pole from one of the pavilions from the 1939 World's Fair. Pretty cool what you can find just laying around that someone discarded.

I was told to keep it like it is , but i may mount a sign on top or some type of light. i dont think that would harm it.
Nice find. I have a silver spoon from the same fair I found in a barn in New Hampshire. Mine is from the Columbus Expo. Have a pocket knife also but think it is just from the fair not an expo.

No red neon light, something more period corect I think i have enough neon running out of room!!
If this base were mine I would start googleing the worlds fair and start looking for any images of the fair. There is a good chance you could find a picture of this base with the original sign. Then you could restore it to it's original purpose.
Seems like you have the only one on ebay. Nobody else seems to have the same or even similar sign post. They probably got thrown away after the fair.
Hi rocker, I did do some research on the sign poll and found a picture of the train pavilion and the sign poll near the entrance but its a little to far to read. i will keep looking, thanks for the Love.
Would make a great base for a old parking meter

I have a sign post fromm the 1939 Worlds Fair too. This one is 24"round and aprox. 150lb.
There were several of these bases made for the fair. They were used mostly as bases for poles that had a loop in them at the top where a rope passed through with an overall height of about 40". They were used to keep lines of people in an orderly fashion waiting to see an exhibit. I am sure that many were scrapped for the war effort.
