I found this stop sign in the woods recently and have not cleaned it up yet. I have no idea how old it is, but don't think it is very old. It has a strange symbol on it that I have never seen before of a bird on shield. Not sure what it means or if it was put on after it was made by someone. I would appreciate any information on what this symbol means or if it would help date the sign. It is 24" across. Any suggestions on cleaning it without hurting the sign/paint would also be appreciated. Thank you!

When you blow the picture up to about 150% it sure looks like an amateur photoshop job.

You are right, it isn't old. Original stop signs were yellow with black letters.

That shape might be of a state or province, are you in Canada? Is there any info on the back of the sign? Most state D's.O.T. have information on the backs.

The design has been added by artificial means. You can see through the white area and still see the dirt below it. When you try altering an image you need to be sure you don't overlay with something transparent. Then you blend over it if you insist on doing such things for fun.

Couldn't the dirt be over the white area?

fhrjr2.... obviously you have no idea what you are talking about because there is no photoshop AT ALL. Maybe you have plenty of time to photoshop pictures, but I dont and since I am not trying to sell it or get any money...why the hell would I photoshop it. So before you accuse someone of doing "an amateur photoshop job" how about you get some information first. The sign was found in the woods with several other signs layered up. There was another sign on top of the symbol to make it look like that. I did not paint anything.

Pop_abides... thanks for your response. I haven't looked at the back for any numbers yet, but I will check it out. I am in NJ and have not seen any symbols like that around here. Again, thank you for looking! Have a nice day!

Clean the area around the "bird" with some mild soap & water & try & get a clear image of it to post.

If you take the time to enlarge the image it is obvious the emblem is over the dirt. It was artificially added after the fact. It may well be a decal but it is certainly not an original part of the sign. The decal (image) portion of the picture will take 600% magnification without blurring while everything else blurs. At 800% the image begins to blur and everything else is a blob. Must be a miracle of mother nature.

Any time you feel threatened just feel free to delete my input. You are bound to find someone who will search for this.

If you take the time to look at the picture again, you will see that the dirt is clearly on top of the emblem. It may appear brighter because the paint is reflective just like the lettering which easily tricked your amateur eye. I took Walksoflty's suggestion (thank you by the way) and cleaned the area around the emblem. It MUST be a miracle because I was able to remove the dirt from UNDERNEATH the paint without disturbing the original image....WOW, I AM GOOD!! Maybe you should have your bird look at it....maybe he will recognize the bird in the emblem.

I am not threatened at all and will not delete your comments ...I want everyone to see how wrong you are.

You are right USACollect....the dirt was over the white area. I didn't clean it at the time of the original photos, but I just added two more with the area cleaned. Thanks for your input. Have you seen anything like this before?

@fhrjr2 You have no idea what you are talking about. There is no meta on the image, and all the blurs, scratches, and glares are natural. Any trained eye will tell you these images aren't shopped. The 2nd image (close up of emblem and bullet hole) is just a poor image. Either that or Nugheads1 is the best graphic designer in the history of Photoshop.

@Nugheads1 Notwithstanding all the other nonsense, the sign definitely isn't old. My best guess on the age would be '60s or newer, possibly as new as within a decade. Somebody may have just grabbed a brand new stop sign a few years ago and wandered out into the woods to use it for target practice. Realistically, "value" is probably $25 or so, maybe a bit more since it does have the unusual emblem.

P.S. - Don't delete fhrjr2's posts. They can serve as an eternal reminder of what happens when you post things before you know what you're talking about.

I ask my bird, and he says he didn't remember this side of the family. Sorry shouldn't said that, but thanks for the mystery, I'll be searching for this symbol now. Will also watch this posting for the answer, if I don't find it first.

It definitely looks like a bird now, I was considering a seahorse. lol
Are there any parks, or large privately owned properties nearby that might have this symbol?
    14. walksoftly walksoftly, 12 years ago
@ aycockonxion those aren't bullet holes they are bolt holes.

I got thinking about your sign's maker's mark and I thought the bird resembled a roadrunner, so I typed roadrunner signs in my browser and got this, maybe they could help identify the maker http://rrhsi.com/

    18. Nugheads1, 12 years ago
I cleaned the back and did not see any DOT markings or numbers.
