Two days ago I hopped into a Vinnies and spied this "Flaska" or "Plunta" on the top shelf behind the counter. I could see that the decoration was by Kosta Boda's Ulrica Hydman Vallien. But I had never seen this series before. It was huge! It is 31 cm (12.2" ) high.

When I got home I emailed a friend with a photo. My friend Thelma had worked in one of the large department stores here in Sydney in the Kosta Boda section. She was able to tell me that it was from a series called "Indian Summer" and had a short run in 2000. It is signed within the pontil "Kosta Boda Ulrica HV 80021."

She wrote me: There were 5 bottles in series and the description for Indian Summer” is a warm transparent colour scale inspired by the hot season”.

"For Indian Summer, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien developed a new type of paint, giving the glass a warm, transparent feel. The clear-glass bottles are blown in classic blowing-room style and are decorated with plumed figures both male and female."

I have also read that Ulrica described the Indian Summer series as : "in 2000 I began to long for clear glass and the traditional flask shapes with an old technique of pinching that creates a double wall. Indian Summer was a glorious glass series, which did not stay long on the market, partly because the price was too high, partly because the painted figures were unexpected and not as charming as the market might demand."

      Thanks austrohungaro!
I made a sizeable donation for this one.
They wanted seventy and I was happy to give it.
My father once managed this same Vinnies store in the 60's.
There are a number of items that I have bought there over the years.

Nice V, love the stories of how people found their pieces. I always find the hunt the best! Haven't found much myself, only one piece of interest and I need to get it posted before spring break next week. Going on a little holiday!

      Hi Amber, many thanks!
I've been out today and bought a nice vase and another arrived by post this arvo'. That will keep me busy for a while.
      Where are you off to?

Indian Summer in the Garden of Eden?
      What a delightful piece.
Isn't the variety of what's out there intoxicating?
It's great to always be seeing new things.
      good day to you all,

Thanks Bellin. It seems there were five bottles.
I think I saw yours some time ago.
    14. vetraio50 vetraio50, 9 years ago
As far as I know and have seen just the bottles. She was fooling around with clear glass as a reaction against the coloured glass of the time. The two piece construction of the bottle is a really traditional Scandinavian glass blowing technique. You'll find smaller versions of this construction in little decanters. Hoglund used it too! They have lovely little silver cork stoppers and bull faces on the sides.
But her innovation here was to pinch the centre of the bottle and thereby create asurface to decorate with the Indian Summer decor. Seduction. Snakes. Feathers. Indians! Fantasy items!

That is just sad news and here's the odd part , I had a guy that wants to buy my flask and then he told me his set would be complete.

Completion of a set is important, Sean and I’m sure they’re not often seen .... but you have two, no ???
