This barbed fence was cut from a large piece of sheet metal. When pulled on both ends it opens up to form the fencing you see in the photo, kinda like paper dolls. The patent mentions the care given to the proportions of the wire to maintain its beauty. Would love to see a fence of this stuff. It was found in an abandoned boxcar in Arkansas.

Patent #238,296, March 1, 1881 by George Kirchhoffer of Chicago, Illinois.
