    Copper or brass object that seems to open on both sides and has chinese or japenese symbols. Bought for 5 dollars and I'm not sure what it is.

      The first thing that came to mind is Tibetan Prayer Wheel. Seems to be missing the wood "handle" Does the middle part of the container move? The little dangling piece is a sort of counterweight. Here is a link that might help out.
