I'm trying to determine the age on this tack hammer and if it may be hand made. There are no maker's marks. My Father was always bringing home things like this and now it is mine. It looks like an elf hammer to me (shows how much I know.....) It's a tiny little thing; about 8 1/2" long. I haven't had any luck finding out anything on the internet. Anyone knowledgable about this beautiful tool?
This is an upholsterers tack hammer for use on furniture, may not be old at all they are still being used and sold new today.

I missed this when it was first posted. I agree it is an upholstery hammer but I would research it a bit. The one you show has a really sharp curve on the ripper claws. It was used to remove old material as well as install the new material. Most of the modern ones lack the curve and the head is usually slotted to hold the tack to start it. Other ones are not slotted but the head is magnetic so it holds the tack to start it.
I have three drawers full of hammers and still gather them up now and then. This one would interest collector's in a couple different areas. Not a high money item but certainly collectible.
I guess there is still a mystery here. What the heck is a "peen"--sounds like a bird.

You have your hammers mixed up. The other one is the ball peen.
Shows how much I know. I'll study "peens" for a while and maybe I will get it right.
