it's pennsylvania dutch. mike wolfe from American Pickers has picked this stuff up before. I know it's worth something. The fact that it doesn't look cracked or chipped is also a plus.

Your jug is an Ovoid shaped jug with applied handle. Mid- 19th century. Here is a little tid-bit on Thomas Hope.

Just to explain what you actually have there, it is a typical example of American stoneware. Jugs like this (as well as jars, pitchers, "crocks," etc.) were made by hundreds of different stoneware potters working throughout the United States, and they were used to hold anything you needed a container to hold. The hey-day of American stoneware is approximately 1800-1880, with mass-production starting to take over around that time. The mark on your jug is not that of the potter. Potters, when they did mark their work, would stamp it with either the name of their own pottery or that of a merchant who was selling the stoneware on the secondary market. Based on the decoration, your jug was probably made in New Jersey. This is a fine example of American advertising stoneware; the value would probably be in the $300-$500 range. You can go to http://www.crockerfarm.com to learn more about what your jug actually is and see what these sorts of things sell for. I hope this was helpful.

Well since I am a founder / owner of Crocker Farm, Inc., I'm not even really sure how to respond to your message. I guess you didn't really look over our website; our low fees (11% to the seller; one of the lowest around) are clearly stated there, and our past auction highlights (well over the $4,500 you mentioned) are also posted there. Just to clarify, my father did not give you a $100-$150 presale estimate, he gave you a $150-$300 presale estimate, and his goal is to be on the absolutely conservative side (a $150 low end for this piece is realistic, a $300 high end is conservative; we have items sell over high estimate all the time). Everything we do is driven by integrity and honesty, and that includes our presale estimates; we don't tell people what they want to hear in order to garner consignments--we tell them the truth, and are constantly praised for our honesty. I guess that's all I have to say, because I feel like you made some very unfair and unfounded accusations about my company--when we took the time to provide you with both a free estimate and cordially offered to sell your jug in what is recognized as the best auction of its kind in the country. I wish you the best with whatever you decide to do with your jug. Regards, Brandt Zipp

Brandt, just checked your site and it looks like you have handled some very important pieces of Americana. I would have no reservations consigning my pottery to you, in fact will be doing just that in the future.
So if nothing else here, you have gained a future client.

I know what you mean cody, sometimes things just happen way too fast. Ya gotta learn to slow down a bit when it comes to business/money to soak in all the information out there.
You got a good eye for the old stuff, the rest comes with experience.
