I've had this for about 8 years, hanging in the back room. It's made very well, though framed very poorly. Not quite sure of the origin or time period, but I like it none the less!

that enormous 'mourning bow' on her head is quite a statement.

I didn't realize that's what the bow was, thanks for the info, ho2cultcha!

i assumed that it's that - as is a black bow in latin cultures. could be wrong though.

Hi! It's a French costume. The region is Alsace. The yeast cake she is presenting is a 'kugelhopf'.
      http://www.francemonthly.com/n/0904/recipe.php
Legend says that the Kugelhopf was a gift from the Three Magis coming back from Bethlehem 2000 years ago...

Check out this Pinterest page for photos of regional costume headgear!

On her head is the 'coiffe alsacienne'.
To get it to that size it is 3.6 metres long! That's 11.8 feet, I think!
The regional dress pictured here goes back to the 1870's, when the region became German. The bow got really big during the occupation and was particularly worn in Strasbourg. Before that time the ribbon was not so exaggerated. Note too that she is wearing a 'cocard' on one edge of the ginormous bow, it shows an attachment to France with the 'tricolore', the 'bleu, blanc et rouge'. The rest of the costume includes:
      -chemisier blanc en broderie anglaise
-jupe avec un corselet blanc et plastron
      -tablier noir brodé
      -châle rouge vert
      -panty et jupon

The ducks are mulards or moulards! The French use them for 'foie gras'.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulard

The Mulard (or Moulard) is a hybrid variety of domestic duck produced by crossing a female Pekin with a male Muscovy Duck. Since the domestic Pekin is descended from the Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and the Muscovy (Cairina moschata) is a separate species, all Mulards are sterile F1 hybrids. Most are bred through artificial insemination, and are sometimes also called "mule ducks."
