I do not know much about this other than it belonged to my parents, and is, I think, a silver plated and glass vase. I love the skill that seems to have gone into making it.

Thanks for the info scandinavian_pieces, I do not know much about antiques, I just know I like them. It is about 12" tall, and as you say possibly is solid silver now I have looked closely.

Sometimes the had the "S" to identify silver plated.. but it has the lion stamp in the proper place. I'd be surprised if it was silverplate. Of course.. the Crown 1st..

I agree with Scandi, this is sterling silver, Birmingham, 1910. The S is the date letter, the crown is for the Birmingham assay office, the order is the right order for that year.
The story goes that when Birmingham and Sheffield got their own assay offices in 1773, it followed meetings of the petitioners from both cities in a pub on Fleet Street, London - the Crown and Anchor. It is alleged they tossed a coin for it - which is why Sheffield, miles from the sea, has an anchor. Ain't urban legend great. I love this story as I work just off Fleet Street.
