these were my grandmothers. i dont know what they are for sure.guessing candle holders.. im intrigued by them. can you give me any info on them..I have showed them to 3 antique dealers that didnt know for sure what they were either..1 dealer thought they might be reverse glass???..one of them on the bottom says pat. august 11 ,1896.

How tall are they?
it is painted behind the glass..and seems to be hollow in the middle..there is a rod of sorts that goes up the inside..and a square screw on the bottom that holds it there,
They do appea to be candle holders, possible part of a set of garniture may be a larger vase or even a clock would sit between them on a mantle piece. The most unusual thing for me is the photographs attached to them.The glass is painted to resemble agate.
any idea where i can find more info on them.. even possibly what they are worth.
i cant figure out how they got the picture on it.. its intrgueing..

if they are candle holders what is the reason for the screw in the bottom with a rod like going inside...????grandma couldnt talk much and when i was young never had a thought of finding out about them..shoot!! i also have a couple lantern (very small that were grandmas when she was little.. i will post them later this week..ozmarty thank you for your help so far!! means alot!

The frame for the photo could be glued or held buy screws/ rivetts through the glass . If you took one apart you may find out . Ah! the screw if it pushes up ward would be a candle ejector (push rod ejector) to get the candle stub out.

ozmarty.. would make sense except for the fact that where the candle might go if in fact that is what it is..it dosent go all the way through from the top..to push a candle stub out.. now im really getting more and more intrigued.. i will try kovels later today
They look to me as if they could be urns for an infant . Perhaps the one in the picture . With candle holders in the top to hold in the ashes . Thus the reason for the screw on the bottom to hold the candle holders in place and keep the ashes in . Just my opinion .
The push rod does not have to go all the way to the top just free the stub. I have some Victorian brass ones right here that do that.Do both pieces have the same infants photo? I would never have guessed at funnerary urns / jars but all things are possible . That would also make them altarpieces. how macabe!
ok, Late 1870's Victorian piece. They had a candle thru urn to (keep candle burning) w/pix of child lost..... Milk glass not painted. They had techniques of melting glass for colors, etc. to blend .... i would say that it cost a lot of $ back then to have one made. Maybe in Tombstone, AZ, they had a glass maker of urns. Who knows. Check it out.

just found out there was an older baby girl that died..nobody knows how or why she died and she was never named..didnt know that till now.. hmmm...
still on the search for what these are.... still not finding anything of what these are.. still open for more ideas... seems every day gets more and more intriging..the 2nd one has no picture..leaning still on the urn possibility..espeacially after finding out about the baby that died..
This is just an idea, but from the pictures, the opening in the top, could this possibly be a lamp but the insides are missing?
nope.. the opening is not very deep and does not go all the way through...but thanks
