WW11 British National Fire Service helmet. This helmet appears to have followed its owner through change of rank and job. Started as an early standard WW11 combat helmet, painted and issued with decal for civilian factory fire brigade as can be seen by the decal under the top coat of paint. At some point the helmet was painted half red and half green. Owner obviously had some sort of rank as can be seen by the painted band running from front to back. Appears the owner was then a member of the National Fire Service, the whole helmet then being painted grey, with NFS decal on front, senior officer red band, and district he worked in as denoted by the number on the rim.

Wow what a complicated one to work out, normally a red 1" band going over the top & one around the helmet would be Chief Regional fire officer or Fire force commander(under the paint) But an aluminium painted helmet with a 1, 1/2 " red band going around would be an Assistant Fire Force Commander. 39 being for Swindon.
