This Civil War carte de visite (CDV) depicts a Union sailor who served with the blockade forces in occupied South Carolina.

By December of 1861, the Union Navy controlled the area of Beaufort, SC and used it as a base for their East Coast blockade efforts.

The single star (without cuff trim) was the insignia for a USN Botswain and Gunner (24 MAY 63- end of the Civil War) and was for Midshipmen as well (29 JAN 64- end of the Civil War).

Because this CDV doesn't carry a revenue stamp, it most likely pre- dates 1 AUG 64.

The sailors simple sack coat type jacket is unusual and more typical of the Army.

Reproduction of these images in any form is not authorized.
