British WW11 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) steel helmet. Originaly painted black, probably used within the UK, however it was then painted in a cammo colour, possibly when used for reporting nearer the front line in a foreign country. Appears to have some insignia on the front, but I can not make it out. Chin strap stamped with BBC to identify ownership of helmet.

One of the things that amazes me about your helmets, Petey, is the way so many of them have been 'recycled'. Was England unusual in 'retaining' and 'reusing' helmets acquired or used in previous conflicts? I wish these helmets could speak!

miKKoChristmas11 thank you for your comment. Until you mentioned that, I had not really thought about it. However, I think you are right, whilst other countries did occasionally re-use helmets; the British seem to have done the same far more regularly. My theory is that as we were an Island nation, and had to import many materials at great cost in lives, we made use of what we had, and re-used them whenever possible. In fact in this country it is hard to find any pre 1940 metal railings or signs, as they were mostly cut down for the war effort and melted down to make these helmets and weapons.

I have quite a few home front helmets that were reissued or the person had promotion & you can see the previous markings underneath the paint. Plus also when in 41/42 the markings on ARP helmets were standardized they again painted over the old markings.

Thanks for looking tinlid, I get the impression that you have done some studying on the history of the British steel helmet?

I've picked up a few things up along the way as you do. But yes I do like WW2 British helmets whether there home fronters or army ones.
